Sir James McGregor was born in 1889, the son of J. W. McGregor. He was the proprietor of J. W. McGregor and Co. and J. R. McGregor Pty. Ltd., which were wool exporting firms based in Sydney. Accordingly he acted as Chairman of the Australian Council of Woolbuyers and was a Technical member of the Central Wool Committee from 1939 to 1945.
